May 27th, 2020– The COVID-19 pandemic caused for Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) and Swiftel Communications to find innovative and creative ways to continue to serve the residents of Brookings while protecting the employee’s ability to serve. Both the utility and telecommunications industries are deemed ‘essential services’ as defined by the Department of Homeland Security and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). To meet the needs of the community of Brookings, different policies and protocols have been developed to ensure the city’s infrastructure remains effective.

Staff has been, and will continue to be able to handle customer service calls and requests. BMU and Swiftel Communications’ offices will remain unavailable to the general public, however customer service still remains an utmost priority. Customers are being encouraged to communicate via telephone, email and by utilizing on-line services. The drive-up window located at 525 Western Avenue continues to be available to the public, as well as the drop-box on the north side of the building.

Staff will not enter occupied residences or apartment units; however, residents are being asked to contact our offices to determine how our staff can meet your needs remotely. Telecommunications remote assistance and self-installations of services continue to be promoted. Our technicians will assist in helping customers install their Internet, phone and video services. Self-installation and remote assistance installations will continue to be promoted throughout the summer as the community prepares for SDSU to resume classes in the fall.

BMU and Swiftel Communications look forward to continuing our service to the Brookings community by remotely helping and meeting customer service needs during this unique time.
